After reviewing the “3 Identical Strangers” film, several ethical questions came to my mind. There were so many violations of research ethics with the main one being the lack of consent from not only the children, but also from their parents. The IRBs (Institutional Review Boards) are required to read over proposals for research projects and weigh ethics and the possible consequences on the participants of the study. With the triplets, none of this was evident. The research team should have explicitly informed the adoptive parents of the study and what it would entail as well as the purpose of the study. This particular study about twins separated at birth seems to examine the nature versus nurture argument, but we will not reap the benefits of this study for the next 40+ years. Due to the lack of consent, the lack of information provided to families, and the secrecy, I feel that the study was not worth the risk and/or impact.
