Unit 3 Discussion

The year is 1842 and you are the captain of a trading ship traversing the Atlantic Ocean. Your ship was struck by an iceberg and sank. Only 30 survivors remain and are crowded together in a lifeboat designed to hold 8 people. The sky is growing cloud and the waves are picking up. As an experienced sailor, it is clear that the boat will sink if the load is not lightened.

What do you do?

Using what you know about Utilitarianism do you attempt to weather the storm? Throw some of the survivors overboard? Some other option?

Explain your reasons in 100-150 words.
