Polymerase literally means an enzyme that builds large molecules (like DNA) Chain reaction means a series of chemical reactions. So PCR is a series of reactions used to build large molecules (specifically DNA). Essentially it’s like a copy machine for DNA. We can take small amounts of DNA and make millions of identical copies–for example this is how a tiny blood droplet at a crime scene can be used to identify a person that was present.
